Archos Launches Android Tablet

Archos has launched the latest in their lineup of touch screen tablets. The Archos 5 Internet Tablet is the first tablet computer to run a modified version of Google's Android operating system.

Archos even plans to open their own tablet application marketplace for Android, called the AppsLib. Other Archos tablets run Microsoft Windows 7 and a Linux-based Archos OS.

Some users were disappointed that the Android version of the Archos 5 did not include integrated Google Android apps such as Maps, Gmail and Calendar. Archos enthusiasts have since devised a hack to provide the tablet with full access these apps and the Android Market.

The Archos 5 Internet Tablet features one 4.8 inch capacitive touch screen. The 32GB flash version starts at a retail price of $380. Storage can be expanded with an SDHC-compatible Micro SD card.

Besides a built in GPS, the Android version of the Archos 5 includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. Both an FM receiver and an FM transmitter are included.

Unlike the Microsoft Courier, Archos tablets are focused on web browsing and multimedia. Even though the LCD screen is only 800x480 pixels, the Internet Tablet is capable of playing HD video at 720p.

Although it does not support multi-touch, the Archos 5 Internet Tablet relies exclusively on touch input and a virtual on-screen keyboard.
